I have been team leader on two international shark research expeditions. The one in the Adriatic was the largest ever undertaken in that area.
I wrote the first ever paper on Population Dynamics of White Sharks in Southern Africa. 1995 – Academic Press.
Professional History
In 1990 I joined the White Shark Research Project of the Shark Centre at the SA Natural History Museum. I was a lab assistant. How I arrived at this position is an incredible story on its own but this will have to wait.
1991 to 1992 I worked as an operations officer and from 1992 to 1995 I was operations director.
From 1995 to 1997 I was director of the SA White Shark Research Institute.
In 1997 I founded White Shark Projects with my wife.
I am a world authority on white shark behaviour and white shark attack. I have a book which is to be published by Random House. The book is named Great White Sharks on Their Best Behaviour and I also have a white shark novel called, The Shark, to be published by May 2009.
It’s interesting to note that since the age of six, I was obsessed with sharks and always dreamt of working with them.
My World Firsts
I am the youngest person in the world to have ever caught a great white shark. I was eleven when I did this and the record still stands today. At the age of twelve, I came close to losing my life to a very large white shark.
I was the first person to ever attach a camera to a free swimming white shark and I was the first person to take blood from a free swimming white shark.
I am a pioneer of free diving with white sharks and am one of three people who have done solo free diving with white sharks.
I have tagged more white sharks than any other person.
I was the first person to explore white shark attack in a bite tube and I am recognised as an authority of this subject. I designed an ecologically friendly anti shark system called the Shark Fence for the City of Cape Town.

I have worked on and featured in numerous documentaries, including National Geographic, BBC and Discovery Channel. I am currently working on a Discovery series called Shark Family where I am one of the main characters. I have featured as a chapter in three books.

I have now dedicated myself to inspirational speaking and writing. My chief key note is called Growth Beyond Fear but I also talk about sharks when requested. Growth Beyond Fear is dedicated to showing people how to reach their full potential and realise their dreams by being willing to drop limiting beliefs and walk through their fears. I use much of my shark work to illustrate these principals.
My Shark specific talks cover white shark behaviour, white shark biology and shark attack.
